My partner also had an idea whilst watching "U Smile" by Justin Beiber. In this video it is easy to distinguish between past and present because of the use of black and white colouring. We could use this in our music video when the performer is thinking about times he's had with his girl.

New ideas
When I was watching music videos on YouTube today I came across "In The Morning" by J Cole. This video makes use of a split-screen (0:19-0:36), in which we see J Cole and his girl both at home getting ready before we go out. The impact of the split-screen on the viewer is that we see an instant connection between the two of them.

What you've written about the JB vid is perfect, but what else does the split screen effect do? What does it tell us about the 2 characters?
